DETAIL: Espley painted mainly from life, often drawing first. He also photographed to aid memory of the subject, mostly using an instant camera. He mostly worked in oils. His usual palette was: Flake or Titanium White, Genuine Naples Yellow, (both pale and dark) Vermillion, (genuine) light red, Raw Umber, Ultramarine and Viridian. He sometimes worked in watercolour and pastel.
