Rupert Shephard was born in London. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1926 to 1929 and began to show with London Group, Cooling Gallery and with Euston Road School painters, sharing studios with William Coldstream and Victor Pasmore. He had first solo show at Calmann Gallery in 1939, the year he painted two portraits of Dylan Thomas.
During the World War II worked as a draughtsman in industry and was appointed an Official War Artist in 1945, going on to teach at the Central and St. Martin’s Schools of Art from 1945 to 1948. Late in 1948 he moved to South Africa and held the post of Professor of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town until 1963.
Following his return to London he restored his reputation in this country with a long series of solo shows at Agnew’s, the Patrick Seale Gallery and at Sally Hunter Fine Art.
