DETAIL: Painter, printmaker, notably of London landscapes and flowers, lecturer, born in London, daughter of the artist H Clarence Whaite. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1952–6, at the University of London Institute of Education, 1958–9, and at the Royal Academy Schools, 1968–9 and 1977–8. She became lecturer, then senior art lecturer at St Gabriel’s College of Education, 1959–78. Whaite was elected to the Art Workers’ Guild in 1982. Her solo exhibitions included Camden Arts Centre, 1982; Royal Free Hospital, 1983; Japan, through Business Art Galleries, 1985; and Museum of Garden History, 1988–93–96. She shared shows with her father at South London Art Gallery, 1979, and Museum of Garden History, 1990. Gillian Whaite’s work is held by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers; Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, America; and the Museum of Garden History. From 1996, she lived in Chichester, Sussex.
