DETAIL: Painter, notably of portraits, teacher and illustrator. He studied from early 1920s at St Martin’s School of Art with Stafford Leake; won a scholarship to Royal College of Art, 1929–32, where his teachers included Randolph Schwabe, Gilbert Spencer and Barnett Freedman; studied at evening classes for a diploma in the history of art at London University; and continued with evening classes at St Martin’s. His 1930s work included a period with the Lintas advertising agency. During World War II Gower worked in psychiatric hospitals, making studies later worked up into oil paintings. Went on to show at RA, RP and was included in the Lintas Beyond the Horizon show at Agnew, 1988. Gower also designed the jackets for children’s books and taught at the Working Men’s College as well as lecturing in history of art at Harrow and Willesden Schools of Art and at Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute. In 1986 a show of his work was held at Watford Museum, in 1996 a memorial exhibition at Bushey Museum.
