DETAIL: Painter, teacher and writer, born in Redditch, Worcestershire. Studied at Ruskin Hall, Bournville School of Art, Birmingham College of Art and, after three years in the painting school there, completed his training at Birmingham University. In late-1970s he became a research fellow at University of Exeter, and for some years was senior lecturer in charge of painting and art history at Rolle College, Exmouth, resigning in 1982 to paint full-time. Did work for Open University, wrote articles for art magazines and was co-author of a book on child art: Learning and Teaching through Art and Crafts. Showed with RBA, RWA, at Stroud and Sidmouth Festivals and had several dozen exhibitions, including City of Plymouth Art Gallery, City of Exeter Art Gallery and elsewhere throughout the west of England. Cotton was elected the first president of the new South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, launched in 2000. In 2001, David Messum exhibited French, Irish and Italian pictures by Cotton, in which thick impasto and a rich palette featured. It was followed in 2004 by As I See it, views of Provence, Ireland, Sicily, Venice, Piemonte and Hartland. Had a studio at Colaton Raleigh, Devon.
